How to Calculate Overtime Pay

Overtime pay is extra pay earned when you work more than your regular work limit. The most common overtime method is time and a half, which means 1.5 times your regular hourly rate.

Overtime Pay Formula

Overtime pay = Overtime hours × Hourly rate × Overtime multiplier

Example:

Hourly rate: $20
Overtime hours: 5
Overtime multiplier: 1.5

Overtime pay = 5 × 20 × 1.5 = $150

Total Weekly Pay Formula

Total pay = Regular pay + Overtime pay
Regular pay = Regular hours × Hourly rate

Example:

Regular hours: 40
Overtime hours: 5
Hourly rate: $20

Regular pay = 40 × 20 = $800
Overtime pay = 5 × 20 × 1.5 = $150
Total pay = $950
